This is a graphic showing the temperature anomalies since 1850. This is what we normally think of when we talk about anomalies. (from Climate Lab Book)
However there are many major anomalies when climate change is reported in the media which are often more curious.
To pick just one, who is going to be affected?
Google search “country name” +”sea levels” in the “news” tab and you will receive the following number of hits ( at time of post)
Tuvalu 2,200
Kirabati 2,580
Netherlands 6,860
The combined population of Kiribati and Tuvalu is 114,040. The population of the Netherlands is 17,143,200.
Is it curious that there are not more news stories about the impending overwhelming of the Dutch state? Considering that the % of the Dutch population affected at risk due to Sea Level rise is 47
So why is this? It might be because they are the tallest nation in the world and a pair of galoshes is all that will be required.
Or maybe it is because the media prefers to focus on the risks Climate Change poses to tiny far away islands rather than populous western states, because it is just more reassuring to it’s consumers.
