The number of people employed in Brussels as administrators is 32,966

This is the number of driect administration officials and may under-represent the total number employed servicing the EU.  There is an estimate of 170,000 (from 2008)

How many civil servants should be employed by the EU?

The civil service in the UK employs 439,942 people

The civil service in France employs 2.484m people (this figure is the number for State civil service to try to not confuse public sector workers such as healthcare professionals) (2010)

The civil service in Germany employs 1.406m people (using 38% of 3.7m to account for civil servants only – although this appears to inlcude judges) (2010)

UK 64m

France 65m

Germany 82 m

The lowest ratio of civil servants to population is the UK, at 1:147.

To employ the equivalent number of civil servants to service the EU population as a whole the total number of civil servants at the UK ration the number of civil servants would be 3.4m (508m EU population)

or to put it another way, the EU commission employs 100 times less civil servants than the UK normalised to population
